Arnaldo Madureira e Sousa 1898-1988 Mathematician and university teacher |
Arnaldo de Jesus Madureira e Sousa, son of Arnaldo de Jesus Madureira, was born in Vilarouco, S. João da Pesqueira, on 22 December 1898.
He graduated in Mathematical Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto in 1921 with the final mark of 17 [on a scale of 0 to 20]. In 1924, he completed the Mining Engineering course at the Technical Faculty with the final mark of 16.
Assistant teacher of Mineralogy between 1921 and 1923, he was later appointed Assistant teacher of Analysis and Geometry. From 1928 on, he was responsible for the chair of Superior Algebra.
In a session of the School Board of the Faculty of Sciences held on 1 July 1943, he was awarded the degree of doctor of Mathematical Sciences.
In January 1933, he sat the exams for the position of Full Professor of Mathematics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, along with Augusto Hermenegildo Ribeiro Peixoto de Queirós and Fernão Couceiro da Costa, and was approved unanimously. In the voting for the Assessment of relative merit, he came in second. He took up office as Full Professor on 29 April 1933 together with Augusto Queirós. The ceremony was chaired by Professor Mendes Correia. The work presented at the exams was entitled "Resoluções algébricas das equações" [Algebraic solutions of equations] (Porto, Imprensa Portuguesa, 1932).
Arnaldo Madureira e Sousa directed the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto – he was its 9th director between 25 March 1957 (he took up office on 9 April) and 1967 (discharged, at his request, on 9 August). Arnaldo Madureira e Sousa was also librarian of the Faculty of Sciences between 5 May 1955 and 8 April 1957).
He died in 1988.
